Transparency is being able to openly prove that a product is what the labelling says it is including knowing all key ingredients and processes throughout the entire supply journey.
The quest for heightened transparency has increased the need to understand exactly what has happened during the supply journey. Technology pays a big part in this and the solutions generally fall into 2 areas.
Those that Identify – these usually can be tampered with.
Those that Authenticate – these usually can’t be tampered with.
On the identifying front, machine readable codes (both 1D eg. GS1, and 2D codes) has been around for many years. These enable good product identification, allowing information to be passed efficiently up and down the supply chain. But in the end, the information is still open to tampering.
